The i5 refers to the Intel Core i5 processors and refers to how many processor cores there are in a computer. Many modern laptops with this inscription will have between two and four cores.

i7 is typically found on more powerful workstations and desktops. The Intel Core i7 has four cores, making it faster than an i5 but slower than an Ivy Bridge-based desktop PC with a six-core CPU that happens to be named the Core i7 Extreme Edition.

Only newer laptops will have this inscription. For example, the MacBook Air uses an i5, which suggests that the MacBook Pro probably should too (but doesn't). Also, older laptops that can be upgraded to Ivy Bridge processors will have the i7 inscription as well.

--- As per your question above regarding what does i5 mean in laptops: "what does i5 mean in laptops" is referring to processors and CPU power/speed. i5 is relatively a newer and more modern processor from intel but i7 is more powerful.
